European retail sales fell 1.6 per cent from last year

European retail sales have shown a surprise fall in December, led lower by Germany and France.

The EU reported a 0.4 per cent drop in December sales and a 1.6 per cent drop from the same time a year earlier.

According to Bloomberg News, the average forecast was for a gain of 0.3 per cent in December from November.
