The European Court of Justice is to hear a reference from the Irish Supreme Court this week about the destruction of a special conservation area in Galway.

Part of the €317 million Galway City outer bypass road scheme - approved by An Bord Pleanála in November 2008 - crosses Lough Corrib, an area which was subsequently designated a site of community interest (SCI) under EU legislation.
