The debt burden of euro zone governments increased in the first quarter to the highest since the single currency began as nations battled the fiscal crisis.

Government debt as a percentage of gross domestic product rose to 88.2 per cent from 87.3 per cent in the fourth quarter, the European Union’s statistics office in Luxembourg said today. That is the highest level since the euro was introduced in 1999.
