More than 1,500 small time landlords and property investors have been hit for almost €75 million in penalties and back taxes over the past two years.

More than 1,500 small time landlords and property investors have been hit for almost €75 million in penalties and back taxes over the past two years, following a blitz by the Revenue Commissioners on rental income.

The settlements, revealed in confidential Revenue briefing documents, stem primarily from a probe into undeclared rents by landlords.

The average settlement in 2012 and 2013 is in the region of €50,000.
