The European Court of Justice (ECJ) will rule on Thursday on whether pharmacists who qualify abroad should be allowed to own or manage new pharmacies in Ireland.
The Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (PSI), the regulatory body in the Republic, currently bans foreign-trained pharmacists from running newly opened shops. The ruling is based on a 1985 EU directive which gives governments discretionary powers in relation to pharmacies which have been open for less than three years.
