EU referendum to take place on May 31st

The Government will to hold a referendum on the EU fiscal treaty on Thursday, May 31st.

The Government has decided to hold the referendum on the EU fiscal treaty on Thursday, May 31st. At the cabinet meeting in Government Buildings this morning, ministers agreed to ask the electorate to approve the treaty at the end of May, just two months away.

Legislation to allow for the referendum will have to be fast-tracked through the Oireachtas in the coming weeks, and a referendum commission set up to provide information on the treaty...
