The proposed deal between management and trade unions at ESB contains significant changes to previous severance packages and could struggle to achieve the 1,000 planned departures from the company, according to sources.

Staff at the company's four trade unions will vote on the proposed package at the end of the month.

It is aimed at saving €140 million from the company's wage bill.
