Gas and electricity companies will be forced into offering their lowest price packages to vulnerable customers under new rules to be introduced by the energy regulator.

The move by the Commission for Energy Regulation (CER) could lower bills for tens of thousands of customers.

It comes just a fortnight after ESB Electric Ireland came under fire for saying it would withhold access to discounted gas tariffs from customers whose bills were in arrears.
