Socialist Party’s Ruth Coppinger has won the Dublin West by-election as part of a voter backlash against property tax and water charges.

She was able to stay ahead of Fianna Fáil’s David McGuinness by getting a bigger share of the transfers from eliminated Sinn Féin candidate Paul Donnelly, who finished in third place. After the fifth count, Coppinger was elected with 12,334 votes, ahead of McGuinness on 9,337.
