Eirgrid has abandoned plans to create a €215 million overhead power line from Cork to Kildare via Wexford.

The company received more than 35,000 submissions from the public about the proposed 220 km project, which was hugely unpopular.

It planned on to erecting pylons more than 40 metres high in up to nine counties. Proposals to install the lines underground were said to be too expensive.
