1999: The state-owned Eircom (then Telecom Eireann) floats on the stock exchange and 570,000 people buy shares at €3.90 each.

Late 2000: Eircom spends most of the year in decline and hits a new share low of €2.40.

Denis O’Brien and Tony O’Reilly indicate an interest in buying Eircom’s fixed-line business, as Vodafone agrees to buy its mobile phone subsidiary Eircell for shares.
