Thousands of Palestinians flooded into Egypt yesterday after the Egyptian government announced it was permanently easing restrictions on its border with Gaza.

It was the first time in four years that the border crossing at Rafah was opened, amid Israeli concerns that the move strengthens Hamas’s rule of the area.
