Economist hits out at department over spending

Economist Sean Barrett has urged the Department of Finance to clamp down on spending on state subsidies and tax breaks because of the ‘‘dire state of the public finances’’.

In a note to members of the National Economic and Social Council (NESC), of which he is a member, Barrett also criticised the recent Innovation Task Force report for not attempting to quantify the benefits of its ‘ ‘highcost’ ‘ recommendations....
