Economic issues move centre stage in North
As Belfast played host to its first ever Confederation of British Industry (CBI) conference, news of the financial aid package proposed for the North by British Chancellor Gordon Brown was being digested by the business and political communities.
The package is wholly contingent on devolution proceeding, though the core issues will remain whatever way the political chips now fall.
In the run-up to the elections in the North, earlier this month, some parties suggested Brown would be ‘‘forced’’ to hand over about £50 billion (€75 billion) when he held face-to-face meetings with the political parties in the North last week.
