The decision by Bertie Ahern not to stand in the next general election was, said Taoiseach Brian Cowen, ‘‘the end of an era’’.

He added that Ahern was the ‘‘consummate politician of his generation’’.

Both statements are largely correct, though perhaps not in the sense that the Taoiseach intended.
