Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore has resigned as leader of the Labour Party in the wake of the weekend election results.

Gilmore said this afternoon that he had told the Labour Party general secretary of his intention to resign at 10.30 am this morning.

A contest to elect a new leader is to be held immediately, though it will take some time as the full party membership votes to elect a leader.
