Fianna Fáil is hoping to sidestep the Oireachtas debate on the new drink-driving limits until after the budget

Faced with a breakdown in Fianna Fáil party discipline, the government is expected to put as much distance as possible between Budget Day and the Oireachtas debate on controversial new drink-driving limits.

Taoiseach Brian Cowen and chief whip Pat Carey are being advised to stage the Oireachtas second stage debate and Dáil vote on the new limits well after the December 9 budget, to curtail backbench unrest.
