One sector of the car trade is booming in the face of the downturn - the large number of cars being repossessed has led to an upsurge in the car auction business.

Merlin Auctions, which is part of the Merlin Motor Group, held its biggest car auction ever last Wednesday, when 350 vehicles went under the hammer. Of these, 180 cars came from finance companies who had repossessed them, according to the firm.
