The Dow Jones Industrial Average broke through an important psychological barrier last week, but questions remain as to whether the US economy is truly on the road to recovery.

The Dow, the most high profile measure of the health of US stocks and shares, climbed past 10,000 last Wednesday, leading to jubilation on the floor of the new York Stock Exchange, where some traders wore hats bearing the legend ‘‘Dow 10,000 2.0’’.
