The late Alan Davidson was an amazing man. An Ulsterman by birth and a British diplomat by profession, he developed a passionate fascination with food, became an expert on North Atlantic seafood and, after he retired, compiled the Oxford Companion to Food, a huge book that is just shy of 1,000 pages.
