Don't be deterred from banking

Despite the sector's recent well-documented travails, there are still plenty of reasons to start a career in it, writes Gareth Naughton.

Recent years have been torrid for the domestic banking sector. Having ridden high on the crest of the property wave, the industry was at the centre of the economic meltdown.

Bank staff bore some of the opprobrium that followed, with bloated salaries and automatic bonuses creating widespread consternation.

Bonuses disappeared and pay cuts were implemented. Redundancies and branch closures followed. Now, if the government gets its way, staff at the state-backed banks will take another...
