Top doctors have criticised the portrayal of Portlaoise Hospital Maternity Service as unsafe, claiming there has been insufficient evidence to conclude the clinical care provided at the hospital was substandard.

Consultant paediatrician Professor Tom Matthews spearheaded Irish and international research into asphyxia in labour, which is when a baby's brain is starved of oxygen. This was a common denominator in the deaths of four babies in Portlaoise between 2006 and 2012.
