By any reasonable judgment, this government is a significant improvement on the last one. Judged in the circumstances in which it must govern, it's also better than the one before that, the 2002-2007 Fianna Fáil-Progressive Democrats coalition. That was the administration which really dug the country into the hole between excessive bank lending, a property bubble and huge inflation in the size and cost of the public sector.
