Spirits will have been lifted - if you'll pardon the expression - at Diageo last week, when the makers of Guinness stout, Bushmills whiskey and Smirnoff vodka posted better than expected annual profits, aided by thirsty emerging markets and improved sales in the US.

The world's largest spirits maker posted a 13 per cent rise in full-year profit, with earnings rising to £3.2 billion from £2.9 billion a year earlier, which translated to an earnings...
