The deportation of 46 Nigerians last week brought the state's spending on charter flights for failed asylum-seekers this year to €600,000.

Last Tuesday's flight cost €248,000, and it now looks likely that the cost of all deportations this year will exceed last year's total of €775,000.

These figures are for flights only and do not include the cost of providing gardai from the National Immigration Bureau and other staff to accompany the deportees.
