The Department of Finance is seeking clarification on the European Commission's position on the proposed financial transaction tax (FTT), after EU lawyers said the plan was illegal.

Department officials last week asked the presidency, which is held by Lithuania, if the Commission could indicate its views on the Council Legal Service opinion that the FTT "exceeds members states' jurisdiction".
