Mitt Romney faces the most important night of his political life on Wednesday, when he walks onto the stage at the University of Denver to debate with US president Barack Obama.

Romney needs a clear win in the debate - the first of three televised encounters - if he is to stand a decent chance of halting his steady erosion in the polls and winning the presidential election, on November 6.
