Dempsey rules out congestion charges

There are no plans to introduce congestion charges for drivers in busy cities and towns, according to Noel Dempsey, the Minister for Transport.

There are no plans to introduce congestion charges for drivers in busy cities and towns, according to Noel Dempsey, the Minister for Transport.

‘‘At present, tolls are the only charges. . . made on motorists,” Dempsey said in response to a Dail question from Fine Gael TD Bernard Durkan.

Last week, Taoiseach Bertie Ahern said Ireland ‘‘should consider some of the imaginative proposals that other cities operate’’ to deal with traffic congestion....
