Shares in Dell surged after the company’s first-quarter profit topped analysts’ expectations, a sign that founder Michael Dell’s return to the helm is making a difference at the world’s second-largest PC maker.

The Texan firm said that a 14 per cent jump in average selling prices of its products and the lower costs of parts helped boost first quarter revenue and profit margins.
