Massive Ram capacity and in-memory processing are characteristic of today's database appliance, with Massively Parallel Processing [MPP] harnessing sets of fast processors simultaneously to deliver the compute crunch power.

SAP was an early developer of in-memory processing, now the key technology component of its HANA (High-Performance Analytic Appliance) technology launched last year.
