Dark times in the shadow of the Third Reich
A Man Without Breath by Philip Kerr. Quercus, €15. Reviewed by Julian Fleming.
A Man Without Breath
Philip Kerr's series of Berlin Noir novels introduced the world to Bernie Gunther, a gruff, hard-bitten private detective plying his trade in the Berlin of the Nazis, a dark, terrifying city of disappearing people. The books are notable for their intricate plots and razor-sharp dialogue, and Bernie is an unusually frank yet endearing bastion of integrity in a place where it pays to have none.
