Yet another infamous chapter in the Titanic saga is uncovered in hitherto unseen, damning notes written by Captain Maurice Clarke, the British Board of Trade safety officer, due to go under the hammer in Devizes this week.

Having inspected the ship over three days, Clarke reached the conclusion that 50 per cent more lifeboats were needed but, as his notes reveal, this advice was ignored by the White Star Line.
