Cronyism is just business as usual

The state's founding fathers set out to eradicate a crony culture. Today's politicians have chosen to do things differently, writes Elaine Byrne.

Irish independence was built on cronyism. That cronyism was necessary because it transferred power to a native Irish governing class reflective of the religious and political character of the country.

The unintended consequences of that cronyism have valuable lessons for a bruised Fine Gael in the wake of the apparently never-ending John McNulty Seanad fiasco.
