At least one person seemed to benefit from last week’s financial turmoil in the US - Barack Obama.

Until the latest bout of economic trouble hit Wall Street, Obama had been having his worst phase of the election campaign since winning the Democratic nomination in June.

He had seemed disoriented by the surge of Republican enthusiasm sparked by the choice of Alaska governor Sarah Palin as John McCain’s running mate.
