Criminal legal aid costs fall 10%

The criminal legal aid scheme cost €50.5 million last year, 10 per cent less than the previous year, junior justice minister Dinny McGinley has told Fine Gael TD John O’Mahony.

The criminal legal aid scheme cost €50.5 million last year, 10 per cent less than the previous year, junior justice minister Dinny McGinley has told Fine Gael TD John O’Mahony.

This represented a drop of approximately €10 million, or 16 per cent, since the peak in 2009.

O’Mahony had called for restrictions on the number of times anyone could avail of free legal aid.
