Cowen puts it up to the unions
Union leaders are being challenged to come up with alternatives to pay cuts, but can they produce quick savings of €1.3 billion?
To the surprise of many, Taoiseach Brian Cowen last weekend seemed ready to deviate from the government’s prepared script on how to reduce the €500 million-a week budget deficit through public sector pay cuts. In what appeared to be an about-turn, Cowen raised the prospect of some €1.3 billion in savings coming from reforms, as a possible alternative to reducing core pay.
But the proposal was more a curveball than a peace offering....
