A newly merged council is hiring private debt collectors to collect €25 million in unpaid rates from businesses.

Limerick city and county council has put a two-year contract out to tender offering to pay a “fixed percentage fee” for the recovery of the money from around 2,200 local businesses.

It is currently only collecting just over half of what is owed in commercial rates.
