Car rental costs in Ireland have risen by as much as 217 per cent in the past year, according to new research that will reinforce fears that higher prices could damage the tourism sector.

The survey, compiled by Rubicon Consultants for Hertz, examined the cost of hiring a car for a week in July across seven rental companies, and compared the prices with a week’s rental in July last year.
