The adage of "cautious optimism" has continued to influence both buyers and sellers over the past 12 months.
That said, M&A league tables suggest that the average number of deals in 2011 was around 80, with an aggregate deal value of about €14.3 billion. This represents an increase of around 5 per cent in deal volume and a noteworthy 44 per cent increase in deal value on 2010. (*Source: Mergermarket, 2012.)*
