The KBC Bank Ireland/ESRI Consumer Sentiment Index for September fell sharply, with the index dropping from 70.0 in August to 60.2 in September, as people developed a more negative view on the economic outlook for the next year.
This compares to a reading in September of last year of 53.3.
David Duffy of the Economic and Social Research Institute said the index had dropped to its lowest level since February.
