Hospital consultants will decide next weekend if they will accede to Minister for Health Mary Harney's request to begin negotiations on a common contract on October 1. It is believed that the Irish Hospital Consultants Association (IHCA) is unlikely to agree to the proposed start date without further concessions from the government on the system of state-funded insurance for consultant doctors.
