Some of the mileage expenses claimed by Minister for Education Ruairí Quinn last July included journeys to and from Connemara, where the education minister frequently holidays, according to government insiders.

Quinn has been under fire in the past week for failing to explain why he claimed expenses for a total of 5,100 kilometres last July at a time when his official diary showed travel of just 884 kilometres.
