Confusion in Chad over UN mandate

The recent criticism of Irish troops in Chad has demonstrated a lack of understanding of the UN mandate and the principles under which the troops and humanitarian agencies have to operate.

The recent criticism of Irish troops in Chad has demonstrated a lack of understanding of the UN mandate and the principles under which the troops and humanitarian agencies have to operate.

Last week, a spokeswoman for UNHCR accused the Irish troops serving with Eufor of not upholding their mandate from the UN. It was implied that Irish troops stood by and watched while a mob rampaged through a UNHCR office, robbing and terrorising the staff.
