When the gaunt, smiling gentleman in the grey pinstripe suit and fedora greeted hi s 10,000 cheering guests as ‘‘friends’’, there was more than just an inkling that a special night was about to unfold.

Leonard Cohen is not known for prolific touring, but last week’s expectant audience marvelled at the near three-hour set of impeccably-performed songs from the 73-yearold’s four-decade career.
