Competition Authority alerted to 33 mergers in 2012

The Competition Authority received 33 merger notifications in 2012 while 30 merger determinations were made during the year, its latest annual report shows.

The Competition Authority received 33 merger notifications in 2012 while 30 merger determinations were made during the year, its latest annual report shows.

In October, the Authority took action to prevent the acquisition of book wholesaler Argosy by Eason, marking the first time it took action in relation to an acquisition that was not notifiable under the mergers provision of the Competition Act.

The Authority received 233 complaints in 2012.
