The wild swings on global stock markets last week finished up last Friday with financial stocks recording breathtaking one-day gains.

Inmost cases, the gains were more than enough to erase the damage wreaked on share prices earlier in the week, when panic gripped the markets following the AIG, Lehman, Merrill Lynch and HBOS tales of woe.

The end of the crisis? No chance, sadly. The catalyst for Friday’s gains was the forced ejection of short-sellers...
