A slow drift upwards in sales but no big surge would seem a sensible prediction for 2013, writes Cliff Taylor.

Interesting to see retailers talking about a bit of a sales uplift.

Most seem to be saying that sales are a couple of per cent up on last year, with a decent pre-Christmas showing and a good response to the initial sales period. Is this recovery, or stability, or what?

We are in the realm of speculation here, but I guess the most logical view is that people are getting used to the "new reality"...
