There was something of the look of straw-clutching about the statement from the German government on Friday that said that it expected economic growth to slow from the cracking pace set in Europe’s largest economy in recent months.

German gross domestic product (GDP) expanded by 0.9 per cent, its fastest pace for five years, in the most recent quarter. That scale of growth would be a respectable number, even in a faster-paced economy...
