Four years ago, serial entrepreneur Declan Fearon received a telephone cal l from NCB Stockbrokers asking him whether he was interested in a punt. The Ryan family were looking for an investor for Tipperary Crystal, an ailing brand that was haemorrhaging cash.

Fearon spotted an opportunity in a business he described as ‘‘old, fuddyduddy and in need of a kick in the backside’’.
