According to Monkstown's parish history, fashionable residential terraces such as Longford Terrace and Monkstown Crescent in south Co Dublin were constructed from the mid-1830s in response to the country's first railway, a six-mile track which ran from Dublin and terminated near the Purty Kitchen, just around the bend from Longford Terrace along the Old Dunleary Road.
